Brighten the Corners Stephen Malkmus sings, “If my soul has a shape then it is an ellipse.”
The Starlight Mints might share some geometrical similarities; anything but square, the Oklahoma ensemble crafts quirky orchestral pop gems that completely disregard any notion of right angles. With varied and characteristically unconventional strong structures, the Mints offer ample complexity without losing sight of what they may have been trying to achieve in the first place. While it is easy to get temporarily lost in the fissures and layers of their sound, the band always seems to manage to tie everything together in the end. Imagine playing a round of Candyland while on acid; sometimes all the colors are chaotic and the shapes vague. Then for a fleeting instant the rainbows regain their composure and it somehow all makes sense. You begin to remember why the game is so freaking awesome to begin with, order or no order.
