Do I Know This Motherfucker???

Ragged isn't the right word, but I'm going to use it. This morning I feel somewhat beat up and who knows if it is due to the Bud's or that painful Mets' loss. Sorry to all you True Believers out there, but going down looking is no way to go down. In any event my Thursday night was close to perfect, but before I get to that may I remind you:

End of the World
Record Release Party
Tonight @ The Mercury Lounge!
w/ The Subjects & Stylofone
21+ / $10 / 9:30pm
Stream You're Making It Come Alive

Tonight will be another perfect evening at the Mercury Lounge. I'm super proud of The End of the World and can't wait to hear all the new songs live since they've been a favorite of mine for quite some time. You've read this before so there is no new news, but they are currently a three-piece so that is something different. And hell, if you haven't heard it - it's new to you!

:: Last Night ::

Despite my diminished self-esteem, last night was fantastic fun. After work I met the eMusic crew along with Grant and Oliver at Bar 119 to grease the tracks before heading into Irving. After a couple of drinks with the crew, the interns (I'm going to call them that when they roll together) and I rolled into the club upon which I realized the only Mets' updates available would come from a 9inch TV security was huddled around.

Annuals set was in full effect upon entering the room and despite their sound being a few decibels too high, their set was engaging and highly entertaining. After soaking up a few of their tunes, it made obvious sense as to why they are part of the Ace Fu family. They are a quirky six-piece from North Carolina that features some dual drums, a hardcore style bassist (his moves were straight from Victory Records, but he held it down), a bat-shit-crazy front man who would be a fantastic dinner party host, a guitar player who crept out of a 1976 stoner basement and a stone cold fox on the keys. So yes, they are aesthetically pleasing, but it doesn't stop their. Thought I don't know how to fully describe the crazy aural layers, Annuals will definitely appeal to the kids in love with bands like Animal Collective, Broken Social Scene and Man Man. The fortunate thing for us is their songs are more accessible and fun then their predecessors.

As The Spinto Band jammed away to their patented private school pop, I caught up with Peter and Marni in the back of the room. Those kinds of jawing sessions are what I live for. The catch up session and pointless banter really made my evening.

The cherry on top of an awesome evening was yet another great set by the cheeky fuckers also known as Art Brut. It's quite possible that I've seen this band nearly 10 times this year so last night I was mildly skeptic that the show would lose it's kitsch. After a couple songs it became clear this may never take place because they've written a ton of great rock songs and Eddie Argos is a born front man. They killed their show and even finished with a cover of We Are Scientist's "Great Escape" that bled into the solo bridge portion of "Freebird". Yes, you read correctly - fucking "FREEBIRD!"

The night ended back where it started. I had a final round with Queen Goon, Roedawg and Sidekick before we piled in a cab to our various final destinations.

Don't Go Do It... You're Gonna Make Me Cry...

Pssst... Did you hear the rumor going around town? If not, I'm about to drop some knowledge on you despite the icey glares Emily will throw my way for making this known to the public. Let me ask you this... Do you have Halloween plans? Well, cancel them because its rumored that on Tuesday, October 31st The Rapture is playing a secret (in a sense) show at the Bowery Ballroom. The tickets will go onsale tomorrow (Friday, October 20th) at noon. Be there first because there is a very limited run dropping due to CMJ and various other outside influences. It is going to be a fucking awesome party since the band and label are encouraging folks to dress up for the occassion. Make it happen! I'll see you there.

Beck Fans... Take Note!!!

The announcement has finally been made on Beck's website. This Sunday Beck will play an intimate acoustic show at Norfolk Street's Angel Orensanz Foundation, (172 Norfolk St). It is billed as "Beck and Friends" which can nearly guarantee some bad ass special guests. From what his site says, tickets are $55 and can only be purchased at Ticketweb, (which means you'll get checked off a list at Will Call). Sale starts at NOON today! Though the ticket is way out of my league this should be an amazing show.

:: Coming Down The Pike ::

Before we get consumed by CMJ take this Saturday show and smoke it. Tigercity is my most recent NYC love. Add them to a laundry list, but know this - they stand out and will make you want to dance. What is more fun than dancing on a Saturday night. Go to their Myspace page and listen to "Are You Sensation" and tell me it doesn't have you dreaming of nights where dad would cruise you through town with the sun roof down and Billy Ocean pumping through the stereo. No? Well, then fuck you. Read what the Tripwire thought if you think I'm without credibility. Doubling up this tremendous bill is The Dansettes who bring the funk / soul vibe that will have you dreaming of the better days. This is not to be missed.

:: A Personal Note ::

Last night's Black Sheep release party was a blast and a resounding success. Outside of the mildly douchee club, the evening kicked ass. The crowd was outstanding, the black vodka flowed, my international door crew held it down, Bazooka Joe kicked ass on the wheels of steal and Dres held it down with a 25 minute teaser set of mostly new jams off 8WM/NOVAKANE. To all you kids who think I'm fronting (this is my street talk), give the record a chance. It is a "REAL" hiphop record and the Black Sheep camp is a fucking pleasure to work with. Thanks to all the familiars who came out. Now pick up that joint!

We Waited 15 Years For It...

Ok, so the title of this post has special meaning today. First and foremost it is a lyric from "Fangs and Fog" the fifth track off of End of the World's debut You're Making It Come Alive that Ben was so kind enough to pass along last night while I was worked the Flogging Molly show.

Sidebar :: Do you know Flogging Molly? They are a riot inducing punk band who whipped the kids into a frenzy last night. That was all well in good, but damn, talk about a group of unsharpened tools. The fans were not the brightest bulbs and it mad my night a bit difficult. Thankfully the band and all those dealing with them were solid.

The second reason there is meaning to Stefan's lyric is that today my hard work finally came to head with the exclusive release of Black Sheep's 8WM/NOVAKANE on iTunes a week prior to the rest of the digital stores landing it. Go take a look at the hip hop page, download a track or two and make me a goddamn success. Ok, maybe not, but I'm psyched about it.

:: More Importantly ::

On Sunday I managed to muster the strength to get my fat ass off the couch and down to the Bowery Ballroom. I picked up Rory on the way who regaled me with the accomplishments of his fruitful day, (even if it was only walking around reading the paper - it was more than I managed to do). We arrived with five minutes to spare so we said hello to the troops. Merida informed me that my behavior at 2A on Saturday wasn't nearly as bad as expected while Rachel and I talked about being emo in bathroom lines. It was great until Susan (my fiancé for those of you not in the know) gave me a super sized V&T. A wave of trepidation shuddered through to my core, but I gladly accepted looking for the balance I so valiantly sought all afternoon.

Fortunately for my mental health, the balance didn't come in beverage form, but rather another outstanding set by Sam Champion. It felt like ages since I'd seen the band - in both performance and brodown proportions. The set got off to a mildly rocky start with some heavy popping during "We Will Awaken" that I later found out was creeping from Noah's guitar. By the time their second jam started all the screws were tighter than my brunch beverages and they were on their way to 40 minutes of bliss.

It was by a stroke of luck that Sam Champion landed an opening slot on four days notice that would have them playing to what looked like a cool 350 people. The accepting crowd was treated to a set of new jams the boys have perfected over the course of the last six months like "Heavenly Bender" and the Bones ditty that sounded like he changed the lyrics. Sean, did your girlfriend give up the drums? They closed the set with the oh-so-cherry "A Minor", (is that title correct)? Anyway, I'm not a fountain of information today, but I can tell you this - Sam Champion hasn't lost a step. You folks with labels or you kids with influence latch on now because the first wave is about to crest.

So What If Its Sunday...

Once again its a Sunday and I'm spralled out on the couch like some sort of fortunate beached whale. It is the one day of the week where I actually feel like a man. It spoils me. A typical day consists of two delivery orders, three games and 12 straight hours of football coverage. Today that changes. I'm charging all of you with the task curbing your laziness and getting to the Bowery Ballroom for tonight's Sam Champion gig. They are opening for Okkervil River so you get two awesome bands for the price of one. I had a drink with Jack (Sam Champ's bassist) last night at 2A and he told me about the solid recording experience they recently had up north. They are fixing to unlease some new songs on us tonight so if you are some sort of A&R person (or an intern for one) come see what's up their sleeve. Sam Champion is currently without a label, but their new record is sure to turn some heads. But hey, if you don't like rock n' roll just stay at home and eat some chicken wings... Dick.

Don't let that picture fool you; Noah is a big teddy bear.

Speaking of Sam Champion, they opened for the Bay Area duo Two Gallants earlier this year. I only mention this because a couple days ago Houston, Texas' finest stormed a show and beat up the Saddle Creek recording artists. Fuck the police. Does anyone know what they said to get them so fired up?

You Can Pay 'Em As Much as You Want...

But you still can't win championships or prevent your players from crashing aeroplanes.

In terms of celebrity plane crashes, I think Lidle ranks somewhere between Aaliyah and Payne Stewart; and he's only that high because people thought it was terrorists at first.

If the Yanks wouldn't have choked again this year and done something in the playoffs, he might have ranked up with John Denver and Otis Redding. If he woudld've gotten a perfect game in the world series he coudlve risen as high as SRV and Buddy Holly.

But alas, Lidle is cementing his spot in history as the 30th-37th (undetermined at this time) most noteworthy or spectacular celebrity aviation deaths.

Bummer dude.

Belin Becomes Eclectic...

Ok, so maybe I'm not always the early adapter I'd like myself to be. In fact, I've missed the boat many times, but not because I didn't know. It was more about not wanting to know. What the fuck is a Podcast and why should I care? Well, the first part remains unanswered, but the second part can be easily answered by checking out the laundry list of KEXP Live Podcasts available for iTunes. I'm currently listening to the Dr. Dog, Cold War Kids & Elvis Perkins collective jam with Art Brut, Ghostland Observatory, Soul Position, Favorite Sons, Band of Horses, The Little Ones and so on. It's heaven in my headphones right now.

Speaking of shit you should already know about, but maybe you don't already know about; The End of the World is gearing up to release their debut full-length - You're Making It Come Alive courtesy of Flameshovel Records on 10.17.06. You may have seen these guys at the Fontana's birthday throwdown or you may have seen them last year's Loose Christmas party. If you did, you know how perfect they are and if not, you need to come check them out as we join together for a record release party next Friday (10.20.06) at the Mercury Lounge. They will be joined by Stylofone who are garning quite a buzz and will be loved by all you Thin Lizzy fans. If you aren't in NYC - don't fret, here are some tour dates with more to come:

You Can Get With This...

This is just a heads up in regards to a party I'm throwing for work. If you are an old hip hop head or dig the thought of free vodka, RSVP to the email on the flyer to get your spot on the list. Come show some love. This is a celebration for the release of Black Sheep's 8WM/NOVAKANE which is dropping on 10.24.06, (digital only bitches)!

Take this FLYER and pimp it yourself. I'm a whore.

Beck Plays NJ... NYC On The Horizon...

This little nugget of knowledge landed this morning. Beck is to play NJ. You may ask, "WTF, what about NYC?" To that I answer patience is a virture - we'll know soon enough. In the mean time, pack a lunch and head across the water:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

JELLYNYC
(the folks who threw last summer's awesome pool parties) associate Todd Abramson is proud to announce a very special performance by Beck at The Landmark Loew's Theatre in Jersey City, New Jersey on Saturday October 21st. This will be a full band show, hot on the heels of the release of Beck's highly acclaimed new album, The Information. Tickets are $35 and they can be purchased through Ticketweb or at Other Music in Manhattan and Tunes in Hoboken. They will be available beginning at 4 p.m. on Monday October 9th.

The Landmark Loew's Theatre is located at 54 Journal Square in Jersey City. For more info you may phone (201)798-6055, (TICKETWEB).

Over the last few years, JELLYNYC associate Todd Abramson has resurrected The Landmark Loew's Theatre in Jersey City. The utterly gorgeous and easily accessible old movie house which was built in the 1920's has been transformed into an intimate venue for great indie rock shows over the last two and half years thanks to Abramson. Since 2004, Todd has brought in such monster indie acts such as Bright Eyes, Feist, Jenny Lewis, Yo La Tengo, and now Beck to this truly uniqe space.

Dance & Drink; Drink & Dance...

When Emily dances; I listen. Tonight I'll have my ear to the ground at Botanica (47 E. Houston @ Mulberry) where one of my favorite robots will DJ with her friend Shannon, (not to be mistaken for the infamous Shananana). So in the inspiring words of Heart:

"Come on home, girl" he said with a smile
You don't have to love me and
Let's get high awhile
But try to understand
Try to understand
Try try try to understand
I'm a magic man.

P.S. If you don't know Emily, she is the one sharing the Sparkstini with me in the new Good Times banner. That is proven legitimacy.

Watch The Leather Bro...

Two days - that's how long I've sat on my couch with a computer on my lap. Yesterday this inactivity was due to getting completely shithammered this weekend while today's blame can only be laid on the sleeping pills I took to catch up on my winks. Those things never work. You can sleep for hours, but never feel rested. It's poetic justice without Tupac and Janet.

The middle half of last week was a bit of a wash. On Wednesday I cruised up to the stadium to see game two of the Yankee's series against Detroit, but Mother Nature threw a curve ball that found me sitting on a garbage can for two hours under the bleechers waiting for the umpires to call the game. Once Beach and I got back downtown we hit up the Japanese steak house to drown our sorrows in a delicious meal. On Thursday, Beach and I met outside the stadium for our second shot at game two. We were successful, but much to our dismay the Yankees weren't. This began the tailspin for the Boomers that now finds us firing the skipper which is completely out of control. I won't bore you with my broken heart. At least Notre Dame looked good this weekend.

Friday and Saturday were shitshows of epic proportions. I can't remember much so I'm not going to dig to deep. Friday I worked at Webster before running by Matt and Tumbleweed's house to watch the end of game three. Then I met Evan (who was celebrating his birthday) and we hit Local 138 where Darn, Karli, Christen, Rory and Kaila were dug in. From there we paraded with some of Evan's girlfriend's over to 2A, but on the way we saw one of the best things ever. There was a vagrant sitting on the ground with his back against The Hat and his feet pointing south. I was in front of the crew and noticed he had something that looked like a pile of fajitas on his crotch. Just as he was escaping my site line, he took another container of string beans and dumped it on his crotch. It was the coolest thing I've seen in awhile and just thought you should know.

Saturday Christy and I had a couple of drinks at Webster before heading to Ra Ra Riot who still got the goods despite the loss of their co-lead singer. They are a bunch of energetic kids who will do well once the blog world catches on. Afterwards, folks flooded into the club and we got rowdy. Next thing I know it's Sunday morning and Kyle is yelling at me in between his puke sessions because I kicked him in the nuts.

I need to grow up.

Albert Hammond Jr - Back To The 101

Friday, October 06, 2006

Come to this show and you will have fun

I know this is a few weeks away, but I wanted to let everyone know. This is a night not to be missed. My friend Josh Loring's band, Cult Maze, goes on at Sin-E at midnight on the 20th. There will be excessive drinking, shouting, man-hugs, and all around fun shit.

Seriously, this band rips and this is their new york city debut. Plus, everyone who comes gets to punch matt lancit in the stomach.

One more thing. Everyone should also check out the huge new Dylan exhibit at the Morgan Librabry on Madison Ave. It's supposed to be the shit. I will be in albany tonight to once again re-affirm my man love for albert, julian, and the rest of the strokes. Good time all around.

Ring Around The Inbox...

Last night they Yankees started their October run for the prize positively with a win over the Tigers thanks to some heavy bats. I missed the first few innings due to a game of catch up Christine and I played at 2A. It's always good to see that girl; I've got fond memories. Anyway, the point is there isn't much to bullshit about so here is the latest from my inbox:

** I'd like to start by shouting out Mr. Bothe whose band got a mention on a recent update to the Tool site. He is playing in The Stoner Sessions (inspired by Kyuss, Mush and Om) will play the Alpine Vally VIP section before and after Aerosmith.

** Blue Cheer announced a number of East Coast tour dates. Though my thoughts on their performance at Vice's Intonation festival are less than impressive; you should still attend for the history lesson.

** Speaking of old dudes - The Who returns! That's right, the rock icons return on Halloween with a new record called Endless Wire. Here are streams for a couple of tracks: "Tea & Theatre" and "It's Not Enough".

** If you don't remember Shade from this summer's Loose BBQ at Union Pool it's probably because you were busy waiting for a plate of food. Don't worry, they'll be back as soon as they finish mastering their new record. For a preview, check out this awesome video they made while recording.

** Tapes 'n Tapes are back to their old tricks. This favorite of bloggers everywhere will hit the road in a couple weeks and will return to NYC for a massive CMJ showcase at The Bowery Ballroom, (dates below). Check out their video for "Cowbell".

** If you didn't know, I've been working with Black Sheep on return to glory aka 8WM/NOVAKANE which is set to drop digitally on 10.24.06. You can check out a stream of the new single "WhoDat?" out now and available on most digital services.

Here's what some folks had to say after the private showcase at Mo Pitkin's:

"Attacking the stage with a spitfire of a cappella freestyles, Dres treated the crowd to a skillful mix of old tracks and fresh-cut rhymes that recalled the duo's glory days. Much of the newer stuff contains the purified melodies and plain-spoken lyrics of the Sheep's Clothing era." (Rolling Stone)

"The album 8WM/NOVAKANE which stands for "Women With Women With Weed With Wine With Me" suffers from no lack of creative production or intelligent lyricism. I was surprised at the growth in his style, coming from the harsh misogynistic display of bravado from his persona of the '90s to the reflective and promising meditative styles of 8WM/NOVAKANE of today. 8WM/NOVAKANE may be true to form, but it's definitely not the norm." (The Tripwire)

Wunder Tits And The Birthday Brigade...

Who knew Monday nights could be so rowdy? Last night was an outstanding tribute to Christen and her impeccable rack of lamb. Instead of sticking to my original plan of sitting around and watching the game, I met with Rory, Nina and Christen at Schiller's to celebrate Queen Goon's 25th birthday. We dinned on a bounty of steak and cheese while regaling ourselves with tales from the previous weekend, (Rory and Christen are traveling allstars). Wow, sorry about that last sentence. After a pitiful rendition of "Happy Birthday" - I only say pitiful because you expect more out of a man like Rory whose silky voice is the missing link between Dean Martin and Ray Charles - we hit headed to toward the Mercury Lounge.

We waited out front for Karli who brought the cupcakes that came into play upon our exit. We jumped inside to catch a set by Fields who is getting special attention by Vice and Atlantic even though their latest release came out courtesy of Black Lab. The game is funny sometimes, but the music is definitely decent. There wasn't anything that jumped out and kicked you in the balls, (save the Icelandic princess who has the whole heroin sheik thing nailed down) but they will appeal to the indie kids who dig on bands like Shout Out Louds and Silversun Pickups. They opened with my favorite track from their previous Annex show, "Songs For The Fields" which was nice because then we could concentrate at the task at hand: Getting Christen shitarded.

The mission was fully accomplished by the time we left Mercury. As we hung around out front, it became apparent that treachery was afoot. While Christen and I chatted up Syd, Rory came out of no where and smashed a cupcake in her face. I continued the sweet bukkake when we got to the corner. The girl was covered in delicious - as any birthday girl should be. Darn, Jeff, Karli and the like spent the duration of the evening upstairs at 2A trying to keep Melissa (the bartender) from ripping Rory's nuts out. I'm wondering if they are still intact this morning.

As for the rest of the weekend, it was a bit crazy. On Friday Hawkins cooked me a fancy ass dinner with some short ribs before we cruised down to Bowery to see What Made Milwaukee Famous, (I can safely say it wasn't that band). My attention span for all three bands was nil, so we proceeded to drink our tits off in collegiate fashion. Due to a work induced late start on Saturday; I scrambled to catch up with Hawkins and Jesse upstairs at 2A. Thanks to Merida for setting us up and laying the ground work for an awesome evening that included a stunning Sparkstini (pictured below with Whipple Jr) at Julia's party. Our time at said party was cut short due to the police showing up and Hawkin's being carted away. Julia and I rode with Boss Hog to wait for him while the cops did their bullshit routine. We ended the night somewhere with some people, but I couldn't tell you. The Sparkstini (which is basically a Sparks, rum and anything else people poor into your cup) was a bit of a mind fuck.
