Mystery Boxes Might Be My Favorite.

Yesterday my mailbox had a box waiting that was the shape of a record. After getting back to the house, the obvious suspicion was proven true. The record was a 12” single with a white label simple saying Dirty Harry – Kongo 1. Not recognizing the song title, I threw the vinyl on and was dazzled by its funky goodness. By the end of the track it was easy to identify as Gorillaz. Just incase I checked the web for confirmation. The track is outstanding. Lots of layers but it always comes back to the funky baseline. There are a couple different violin parts on the track that give it a dark unsettling texture especially with the choir type choruses snuck into the song. To put the icing on the cake, there is a rapped versus at the end of the song that aggressively flows right into the beat. Though it wasn’t Del The Funky, it was MF Doom and you can’t go wrong with his style (I stand corrected by Paz; it was not MF Doom). You’ll want to hear the track and then hear it again and again. This has me excited to hear what else Damon Albarn (formerly of Blur) and Danger Mouse could do with guest appearances by Deborah Harry (Blondie), Shaun Ryder (Happy Mondays), Dennis Hopper and Ike Turner. Their first record was solid, but I couldn’t go ape over it. After hearing Dirty Harry I’m ready to let loose on Demon Days Gorillaz sophomore album set to drop May 24th.

If you are hanging out in Austin, try to sneak into this
listening party. I’m sure the list will be out of control, but try to get on there because some special guest appearances are in the cards.

Speaking of 24, did you realize the
American version of the BBC hit comedy The Office will debut on NBC next Thursday? Myspace has a 10 minute clip of the series posted from a link on its sign in page. It’s dreadful. Steve Carell takes on the difficult task of translating the David Brent roll into something accessible to Yankees. Though I’m a big fan of Carell’s work on The Daily Show and Anchorman, this show seems to fall flat. I’ll still watch and hope they can pull it off, but if American won’t by a quirky comedy like Arrested Development; The Office doesn’t stand a chance.

So you know I wasn’t thrilled by
Louis XIV’s live show. This is one point Nora and I disagree on, but I’d have to say she’s right in saying the video isn’t what it should be. The band needed to take a different direction. They aren’t Diego and the other jackasses in Elefant. They are a rock band. They look the part and sound the part. Now only if they’d act the part. Maybe the director had complete control, but for a rip roaring track like Finding Out True Love Is Blind they should have definitely threw some sex, sweat and more rock in the video. I still dig the song on record, but you should decide for yourself, (Windows Media: 56 / 100 / 300 / 450; Real Media; Quicktime: 56 / 100 / 300 / 450). Their debut full length, The Best Little Secrets Are Kept drops next Tuesday, March 22nd and they play the Bowery on April 26th, (Buy Tickets).

One last note before I get back to my real job. I’m certain you’ve been reading various bloggers gushing about
Doves performance at Bowery on Tuesday night. Well, they’ve just confirmed a national tour. Since my life is full of delusion, for a moment I’ll consider the fact that everyone who reads Good Times Roll doesn’t live in the 212 or (god forbid) 718. Take a second to check out their tour dates and mark your calendar because they put on an amazing show. With Mercury Rev opening this tour should do quite well. Check out a few tracks from, Some Cities, their third record (which is one of my current favorites).

The 212 is so late-90's. I'm down with the 646.

I stand corrected, i just assumed it was MF Doom since he is on the new record. I'm sure I was wrong.
