You Like Bands Don’t You?

Good Morning fellow GTR readers. This is your final warning regarding this evening’s big rock show at the Delancey with These Bones, The Blue Van, Tight Fit and The Love Scene. This all falls under the banner of the popular UP! party that Karibomb puts together. Come down and support your scene. If you haven’t been to the Delancey yet, tonight’s your chance to check out the hot shit. These Bones hit around 10pm so don’t be late. Get your weekend started early.

Additionally, I'll be kicking it at 186 after work so if you want to come over, bring beers and we will order Tiny's. Smell that? It smells like the weekend.

Kick Me In The Face.

As you already know, I’ve been spending my early evening hours doing work at the house. Though I don’t have much to show for it, this work has been rewarding. For instance, last night I spent some time sizing up images for this site. If you look to the right of your screen, you’ll see a new image under the Vote 2004 header for Involver which is a new activist email put together by the good people at Flavorpill and Adam Shore. Involver’s goal, like most, is to help rid this nation of the Bush Administration a.k.a. Administration of Division. Please take a moment to check out their site, sign up to their mailer and support their events. If we work together to defeat the common enemy, our future may look a little brighter. Now is not the time to sit back and hope for the best. U-N-I-T-Y that’s how you spell unity.

Also, if you are in the Chicago area or just know heaps about the Windy City, Flavorpill is looking for a managing editor for the upcoming launch of their fifth city. Send me an email if this is something you’re interested in and I’ll pass on the contact information. Editing experience necessary. If you have yet to sign up to the
Pill or one of its various offshoots, check them out. If you sign up you will be entered into a contest to win a bag of goodies. I'm sure it will be some cool shit because they are some cool kids.

I’m More Punk Rock Then You.

Around 8pm I met up with Stevo who was having drinks with Chaz and Emily at One and One. Christie caught up with us before Hawkins cruised through to pick us up for our trip to the Burg. We found a great parking space on Grand Street and made our way to Snacky. Can I tell you how much I love this place? Spread out your arms. I love it that much. It’s a great Japanese Tapas joint that serves tons of small plates with heaps of options. I had some roast pork, crab dumplings and a vegetable pork bun. It was all delicious. Throw in a Sapporo and you have one happy customer. Everyone seemed to enjoy their grub, (Even Stevo whose food was served to him after a long wait).

Our goal was to get to
Trash Bar before the open bar closed out. Let me tell you, Trash is a great club. Fuck Luxx and the whole scene it perpetuated. Trash is the Mercury Lounge of the 718. Its set up is similar to the Mercury; when you walk in the bar is to your left and there are some tables along with a jukebox and pool table. There are also tons of car seats placed throughout the venue. It radiates a campy feel that is all too inviting. We paid the cover to enter the backroom (only 6bones) where there was an open bar (well drinks & PBR) from 9 to 10pm. This is a genius way to get kids out to the club early, get them started, and have them drinking through the evening.

We pounded drinks for a solid hour as heads began to fill the front room. Travis, Becky, Christine, Douglas, Tom (who I haven’t seen in ages), Raffee and others made an appearance for Walk Humongous’ set. By the time Max, Colin and Noah took the stage, I was saucy. My goal was to pay more attention to their songs, but it was nearly impossible due to the amount of eye candy gracing the stage.

If you recall (and if you don’t, you smoke too much pot because it was on Monday), I may have said something about Max being born into the role of a front man. This rang loud and true last night. These kids fucking rock. It’s just that simple. They are a post-punk riot inciting band. By the end of their set kids were bopping around (Tom had joined them on stage) and I was throwing beer cans at the band. It felt like 1982, at least from what I’ve read. Again, they are new, so the screws need tightening, but remember boys, leave a little slack because the uncertainty of their set and the structure of their songs is part of the lure. Each song feels as though it’s on the brink of collapse, but Noah and Colin pull Max right back to chorus before it has a chance to fall apart. Their last song has a mega fun dance feel to it, but Walk Humongous won’t let you have fun without a jab in the ribs. The track (whose name I hope Max leaves in the comments) teeters on a fine line between mosh pitting and two stepping. There are so many comparisons to be made, but I’m not going to waste your time. I prayed to the porcelain God last night that they will make a record, but it wouldn’t matter because their live show is so taste (scat nod). Could they be the start of a revolution? Could it be the destruction of what Noah Champion calls Disco? It’s a bit early to tell. Let me just say that after you see Walk Humongous, you’ll find it difficult to miss any of their shows.
