Holy tits! Would you like me to put this week behind us and focus on the weekend? Yeah, me too, but first I must talk about yesterday evening. Stevo met me outside the office Thursday afternoon and we walked across town to hide from the heat in 186. The roommates were both hanging around when we returned. After a discussion about “SHRIMPS” which consisted of Builder and I yelling “I LOVE SHRIMPS” back and forth, we decided Bento Box was the only way to go. I know it was less than a week ago that their praises were sung here, but that place can be so hit or miss. Last night seemed like a pile of fried food, and even though that’s something I can handle, it was not needed last night.
After dinner Kyle and I walked up to Bside to kick off a buzz before going to Irving Plaza for the return of the Swedes. Some kids trickled in while we shot pool and took tequila shots. Last night Sivan informed me that the Tequila shot plus baby Bud special was only during happy hour. Well, she said it was supposed to be only during happy hour, and from now on that rule would be enforced. I’m starting a petition to get that special to be around the clock or maybe after midnight. It was always a great reason to swing by Bside late night especially when you are need of a cheap means to get wasted.
By departure time, Josh, Dan, Erin and Julie (or is it Julia) joined Sivan, Kyle and I for the walk over to the club. It’s been a long time since I last laid eyes on the outlandish Hives. To be exact it was nearly two summers ago when Anna, Erin, Dan and I drove down to D.C. to see them play with the Mooney Suzuki at the Black Cat. Whitney was kind enough to put us up for the weekend and was our tour guide of party. All I can remember is sweating my ass off, loving every second of the music and dancing around with Anna like a crazy person. If it were possible, I would have bottled up that evening in hopes of sharing it with generations to come.
With that in mind, spirits were sky high. Thanks to Sivan, getting into the show was a breeze. We managed to miss both openers so we made our way to the balcony to get a drink and waste some time. Josh and I decided to head downstairs for a view from the floor. The stage was set for the five piece who came out looking dapper in white tuxes and hilarious bowties. They also had an amazing Hives sign behind them. It was red neon cursive. It looked so Miami that I almost started lifting weights and selling coke.
Unfortunately, their garb didn’t match their sound. After the first song my ears were killing me and I couldn’t hear a word Pelle was singing. The Hives have lost the luster that made Ms. Lane and I swoon a couple summers ago. Nothing about last nights set made me want to dance. Pele was his usual boisterous self. He called for cheers every chance he got. He spelled genius, “T-H-E H-I-V-E-S” which was far from my sentiments. The show was boring and the sound was sub par, but we still had a good time.
For the record, I'm not giving up on this band. They still have a place in my heart, but I don't know if there will be a chance to renue the lease.

Jay, what do you make of Ricky Williams retiring? A bit early dont you think? Do you think I'll be able to retire at 27? Do you think he'll change his mind?
Ricky Williams is a difficult guy to predict. It sounds like he isn't happy. I don't know if he isn't satisfied in Miami or if he simply doesn't want to play the game. I don't think he'll retire, thats my take. But you never know.
