Yesterday Noah and I were walking around St. Marks place in an effort to waste some time before meeting with Greg and Sean for some Chipotle Burritos. We stopped into a couple record shops because I'm looking for this Little Richard double record that I heard a couple years ago at the PR, (Todd if you read this and find the record, can you make me a tape?). The Little Richard record is done live and considered a come back show. If you have a beat on it, please let me know.
Anyway, Noah was looking in the crates at Norm's when he found the pictured record. He believed it was some noise project from the 60's or 70's and had been jones'n for a purchase. He picked it up, we had our burritos and then headed back to 186 to find out what The U.S.A. was all about.
While I sat at my computer trying to dig up information on this five-piece, we were treated to a mash up of sounds that were filtered through Joe Byrd's production heavy ear. The record is laced with samples, scattered lyrics, driving beats, frantic guitar and a sultry voice that in the easiest sense recalls Nico. The band was a project put together by Byrd who, at the time, was a teacher at UCLA. He took some students and colleagues on a psychedelic studio ride in 1968. The trip (literally) didn't last long. This debut record was the only effort by the band. The dreaded "artistic differences" excuse characterized the end of the band and the end of a short lived, but strongly recommended sonic advancement.
The four of us were thoroughly surprised by this record. Though it was all over the place, the record was grounded in its rock beats which always makes this rhythm happy kid smile.
