Let The Games Begin.
Yesterday marked the beginning of this year’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship race. The first game may come to characterize the tournament. It saw the Manhattan Jaspers (12) managed to beat the pants of the Gators of Florida (5). Though the Jaspers had a great season, many enthusiasts did not believe they could stand up against a SEC team, but they did it in impressive fashion. Syracuse, the defending champs, won a heart stopper against Air Force while Arizona, normally a team that hangs around through the first couple rounds, was bounced out by the Pirates of Seton Hall. DePaul managed to fight off first round elimination by squeaking past Dayton in double overtime. If you didn’t get a chance to watch some of the great “win or go home” basketball, settle up to a couch this weekend and make yourself comfortable.
Free Dinner? I’ll Take Two.
Last night a press dinner was held at Tang which is the new Japanese restaurant attached to the Gershwin Gallery Lounge. Hawkins did a fantastic job organizing this event and getting butts in the seats. We invited a few people who we hope to collaborate with on some upcoming events. Look out for these things in the near future. We plan to mix amazing food, great records and some serious good times. You will want to be there.
Anyway, I met up with Liz outside of the Lounge and had a drink at the bar before we were seated. Once we got in the actual restaurant portion of the joint we saw Jocelyn and Jake walk in so we had them pull up a table with us. I did a bit of running around and introduced myself to a couple people, and then we buckled down for a top notch dinner that was made even better by the fact that it was free.
I started with a seared Tuna appetizer that really knocked my socks off. Jake had the same and was duly impressed with the starter. My meal was phenomenal. The chef in this joint has the magic touch. My entrée platter consisted of an eel cucumber roll, some roll called Sex Tang and a couple pieces of sushi. It was a delightful meal, and if I had the cash I would eat like that as much as possible.
As great as the meal was, the company was even better. It’s been way to long since I’ve last seen Jocelyn, but we still manage to fall into our old rhythm. I used to have such a good time at the Flavorpill office and it was mainly due to Jocelyn’s presence eat time I rolled through there. It was also a treat hanging out with Liz since our time together has been minimal lately. She is always a welcomed breath of fresh air. We are planning to meet up on Saturday so we can go say goodbye to Momma Jen at her party. She is moving to Philly soon and she will be sorely missed.
After the dinner I returned home to watch some basketball. Karen called to tell me that Demander had to leave last night in order to avoid their storm on their way to Providence. This is going to be their first show as Demander, and I hope it goes flawlessly. They are all pretty professional so there should be no problem there. She stopped by for a quick hello before going to the practice space to pack up their gear. My night quickly faded after her departure.
Friday's News Shorts.
Tomorrow night Brits all over... well, Britian will be tested by BBC One. This whole idea seems kind of strange. Is it a way to measure patriotism or is it an IQ test? Either way it will be on television, so if you have BBC throw your hat into the ring.
I would have paid $100 to sit in on this interview. Little Richard is the man. He has been around since the beginning, and by the sounds of it, he has a lot to say.
Filter reviews Snow Patrol's Final Straw which finally came out in domestically. These guys are great, and I suggest you see them when they hit the Bowery next month.
!!! talk new record, new 12" and new tour. Polish your dancing shoes. It's that time again.
David Bryne formerly of the Talking Heads, sits down with Guardian to discuss some of the records spinning at his house. My favorite part was that he brings up the fact that he was talking to Brian Eno on the phone. How cool is that?
NY Daily News does a preview of this weekends No Fun Fest out in Brooklyn.
Holy Shit! I know its old news, and this has been reported before, but today's Guardian has a report on the mysterious death of Elliot Smith. If anything, read this for the Courtney Love quote. What about Kurt? What about Kurt?
Speaking of crazy Courtney, NME has a recap of her ranting last night at the Bowery.
Popmatters has a sit down with Noah's favorite band.
That's it. I'm fucking sick of this.
Today's Ipod mix included: Creedence, Proud Mary; Devo, Uncontrollable Urge; Iggy & the Stooges, 1969; Sam Champion, Company Dance; Joy Division, Digital; Justin Timberlake, Senorita Like I Love You; Primal Scream, Rocks.
