Tuesday night is for loafers.
Last night seemed to drag itself out. I stopped by Stevo's on my way home from work and we watched the extra features on the Jackass DVD which were hilarious. Then I headed home and watched a Troy Duffy film called The Boondock Saints which was ok, but nothing to special. It reminded me off all things Tarantino mixed with Scorsese esque religious themes like his first feature, Mean Streets.
Eventually I stepped out and walked over to the Mercury Lounge. Liz met me out front, and we headed into the club just in time to see the last couple songs by Moonraker. I'm indifferent to their music, not because I dislike it, but because I couldn't hear a damn thing over the pack of chatty chaps in the back of the club where we were standing.
We roamed around the club and ran into Matt and Ryan (whose band is playing CB's on NYE), Adam, all the Beachs and the Butt Wiggler. Ok, for those of you who don't know, I'll explain later. As we waited for Metric to take the stage, their were many discussions on why we love Canada and it boiled down to the fact that Metric's leading lady, Emily Haines, is of the Canuck persuasion. It's too bad her lyrics are just a mottled mess of bullshit teenage drama. They reminded me of pop punk music that focuses on not working and bitching about capitalism. They do take a unique stance in blaming the people rather than just the government for America's downfalls, but in the end, I don't care, I just want to rock. Its a tired act, but they still managed to keep the crowd excited including the Butt Wiggler. This guy is amazing. Beach explained that he goes to all sorts of shows and is really on top of the scene. At every show he manages to do the same dance where he double fists beers while sticking his ass out and moving it from side to side. It was truly an amazing sight, and I can't believe I haven't seen him before (or I have and was to drunk to recall). So back to Metric. Their guitar player had a great Joe Strummer aesthetic going for him. It looked as though he was hopped up on speed, and his riffage reflected it. They were really tight, and her range (soft and vulnerable to seething and swaggering) kept me entertained. Though Emily seemed to be way to into herself (with good reason), I would recommend that you check out their melodic dance-punk sytlings before you have to see them at a venue like Irving.
I'm off to get a flu shot before the city runs out. I'll do the news in a bit.
