More Holiday Party Good Times...
When visualizing an ultimate Holiday Party there are a few key elements that will make it great. Free booze, free food, hooking up with random co-workers and solid tunes are essential to the success of any festive soiree. Last night a couple of these variables were neutralized at the annual NYU Law party. I regret to say that there was no hooking up and the music was limited to a guy playing stuffy piano bar style music. However, the booze was definitely free and it afforded me the chance to get drunk with Lauren, my new co-worker. This meant that I started boozing at 4pm. The spread was amazing. There was so much food. There was even an antipasto table which appeased the Italian side of me.
Following the party, Lauren and I hopped into a cab and shot over to the Beach's where we met the good doctor and Liz before heading to the Mercury Lounge to catch the Mobius Band. These three kids have an interesting thing going. I have to say it is very Radiohead, and yet it really appealed to me. They have a fresh sound and though their roots lie in the guitar, bass and drums formula, they play with a lot of toys during their set. I hope to see these guys again very soon.
I then ran over to my apartment to catch the NYE episode of the O.C. It was fantastic. Seth's aunt and her crazy escapades made for an interesting night. Poor Ryan. He couldn't drop love bomb on Marissa, but eventually he came around. Ok, enough of that.
During the show my 3rd roommate showed up and put a bed on his loft. Does this mean he's moving in? Who knows? It's been three weeks and we are still waiting.
I got back to the Merc while Lookout Records up-incomers the Oranges Band were playing their last few tunes. This five-piece has three guitars in it which can make for some loud rock, but it suited my mood. Their pop nature mixed well with the straight ahead riffs that often times referenced NYC bands such as the Strokes.
Last on the bill was Max and the boys of the Natural History. They played a decent set that was marred by equipment problems that included two straps breaking. They played all the hits from their record Beat Beat Heartbeat. I think their whole Elvis Costello meets the less punk side of Wire is a great mix and its a sound that no one else is pulling off these days. Check them out next time they play the city.
Beach and I stuck around the Merc to have drinks with Alec and a friend of a friend who was in from Argentina. I don't remember this kid's name, but he had us spellbound with his tales of traveling around the world. As the night raged on, we found ourselves being the last couple kids in the bar. At one point we were talking old Ska music and show promotion with Issac Green who was a pretty nice guy.
It was another night of good people, good music and good times.
Here's some news...
Though I may be linking to Pitchfork again, my feelings haven't changed since yesterday. Eric Marth can eat it. Here is their Top 50 Singles of this year. Their #1 is undeniable.
Franz Ferdinand give NME the skimmy on their future full-length which is slated for Febuary 9th.
Jack White and the rest of the Cold Mountain cast must be pleased with their Golden Globe nomination.
Yeah, this is a great idea. P Diddy can't be stopped.
Morrissey takes his act back to the studio. Will Britpop ever die? Let's hope not.
Guardian lets us know who won and who lost in 2003. Yeah, the Darkness are here, but will they stay. I know one guy who is hoping so.
That's a lot of clams. Rolling Stones tour figures from Chartattack.
That's all for now. I'm trying to fuel back up for the more parties this evening.
