Preview: The Hold Steady at Prospect Park [Brooklyn, NY, 08.9.07]

This is everyone's favorite word in rock and roll: free.

Well, actually there's a suggested donation of $3, but for a lot of us, that can also mean free.

Thursday, August 9th, The Hold Steady, The Big Sleep, and Teenage Prayers are playing at the Prospect Park Bandshell as part of the Celebrate Brooklyn concert series.

The Hold Steady is decidedly a strong headlining act. No one is going to argue that you have to at least catch them, but don't discount openers The Big Sleep. (Read looserecord's interview). The two of them toured together in late 2006, so this is practically a mini-reunion. Their most recent show was canceled at Northsix when Con Ed shut the power off a couple days early. Instead of playing the farewell Northsix show, the shutters were drawn and with them our chances to hear tracks from (still) one of the great out-of-nowhere freshman albums of 2007, Son of the Tiger. Maybe they were just afraid of one of the loudest bands in Brooklyn taking out the city's electricity.
Because I bet they would have.

Prospect park is one of those places that you want to spend more time in anyway, this is a great reason to experience the Central Park of Brooklyn, or this could be the cheapest date you could possibly have.
